Tips & Tricks about English
What Is a Lump-Sum Payment?
A lump-sum payment is a monetary sum paid in one single payment instead of allocated into installments. Lump sums are commonly associated with pension plans and other retirement vehicles, such as 401(k) accounts, where retirees might accept a smaller upfront lump-sum payment rather than a larger payment issued in installments over time.
A lump-sum payment is an amount paid all at once, as opposed to an amount that is paid in installments. A lump-sum payment is not the best choice for everyone. For some, it may make more sense for the funds to be annuitized as periodic payments. Based on interest rates, tax situation, and penalties, an annuity may end up having a higher net present value (NPV) than the lump-sum.

Commonly Confused words
Raising vs. Rising
Raising is the act of lifting or elevating something, often requiring an object to receive the action. Rising, on the other hand, refers to something that elevates or moves upwards on its own. Knowing when to use raising vs. rising depends on the sentence’s intended meaning and context. For example, “She is raising her hand to ask a question” versus “The sun is rising in the east.” Clear understanding of these terms ensures precise communication.
She is raising funds for the charity event. The farmer is raising cattle on his ranch.
The sun is rising in the east. His anxiety is rising as the deadline approaches.
Meter vs. Metre
Meter and metre both refer to the same unit of measurement, but the usage depends on the regional spelling conventions. Meter is used in American English, while metre is preferred in British English. When to use meter vs. metre depends on your audience’s location. For example, “The length of the room is ten meters” is used in the US, while “The length of the room is ten metres” is used in the UK.
The meter shows the distance the car has traveled. The band played a song with a fast meter.
The metre reading shows how much electricity you’ve used. She ran the 100-metre dash in record time.
Tips & Tricks about international exams
TOLES Exam: Everything You Need to Know!
The TOLES exams test the specific English that lawyers who do not have English as a first language need to work successfully in international commercial law.
Commercial legal English is significantly different from everyday English, or the English needed to do a law degree with a UK or US university.
The TOLES certificates allow international lawyers and law students to provide evidence of their language skills in specific areas of knowledge that are highly valued by employers, such as international commercial negotiations, company documents and cross-border contracts drafted in English.
We offer training courses for all international exams (Cambridge CAE, Cambridge FCE, ILEC, IELTS, BEC, TOLES, and ICFE). Book a preliminary session at contact@cursinengleza.ro.

Tips & Tricks about SEO
The Importance of Meta Descriptions for SEO
What is a Meta Description? A meta description is a brief summary of a webpage’s content that appears in search engine results. It helps search engines and users understand what the page is about before they click on the link. It usually appears right below the page title (or the blue link) in search results.
Main Principles of Meta Descriptions for SEO The meta description should accurately reflect the content of the webpage. It needs to summarize the main point or purpose of the page so users know what to expect when they click. A good meta description is typically between 150-160 characters. If it’s too long, search engines might cut it off, and users won’t see the full description.

The Word of the Month is "Fountainhead"
Fountainhead is a word usually encountered in literary contexts that refers to the origin or source of something.
“Morning air! If men will not drink of this at the fountainhead of the day, why, then, we must even bottle up some and sell it in the shops, for the benefit of those who have lost their subscription ticket to morning time in this world.” - Henry David Thoreau

Commodity vs. Product: What's the Difference?
Although they are often confused and may sometimes be used interchangeably, the terms commodity and product are somewhat different when used by traders today. A commodity often refers to a raw material used to manufacture finished goods. A product, on the other hand, is the finished good sold to consumers. Both commodities and products are part of the production and manufacturing process; the main difference being where they are in the chain. Commodities are typically in the early stages of production, while products fall at the final stage. Commodities A commodity is a basic good used as an input in the production of goods and services. That means companies use commodities in the manufacturing process to turn them into everyday goods. Commodities are found in the majority of goods that end up in the hands of consumers, including tires, tea, ground beef, orange juice, and clothing. Some of the most common commodities include copper, crude oil, wheat, coffee beans, and gold. Commodities can be further broken down into two different categories: hard and soft commodities. Soft commodities are those that are grown and cannot be stored for extended periods. Examples include coffee, cocoa, orange juice, and sugar. Hard commodities are those that can be mined or extracted from the earth, such as metals and petroleum products. Products A product can be differentiated, and value can be added by the manufacturer and through branding and marketing. Products are made using commodities and are then put on the market and sold to consumers.

Sequence of tenses
When an independent clause is in the past tense, any dependent clause must also be written in the past tense, not the present tense or the future tense. Consider the example below for an illustration of this rule:
The cat was bathing because his feet are dirty.
The cat was bathing because his feet will be dirty.
Because the tense of the independent clause is in the past (was bathing), the verb in the dependent clause should also be in the past, as illustrated in the sentence below:
The cat was bathing because his feet were dirty. CORRECT

Tips and Tricks for Job Seekers
Tips For Job Seekers: How to write the perfect CV
Imagine meeting a stranger at a party. What makes for a successful encounter? The first lesson is inspired by an old shampoo commercial: you never get a second chance to make a first impression. The second lesson is that you don’t need extravagant attire to stand out. The third is to remember that what you omit can be as important as what you say.
These principles also apply to writing a CV. A résumé is not an exhaustive list of every job you’ve had or your life story. It’s a marketing tool, much like that hair-care advertisement. Recruiters and hiring managers, akin to party guests, quickly decide if they want to engage further. A study suggests that such professionals spend an average of 7.4 seconds skimming a job application. Here are a few tips to make those seconds count effectively.
Customize your CV for each job application. Highlight the skills and experiences most relevant to the job you’re applying for.
